NYC, Living or Dead, who would you bring?

Posted Tuesday 06 07 2010

 Hi everyone,

Just wanted to left you know a few things.

1. Bruce Lee Never Lost a Fight
2. Bruce Lee was Part German
3. Bruce Lee was an Excellent Dancer and Boxer
4. Bruce Lee was Strong
5. I'm pretty sure Bruce Lee would go see The Grates play at The Mercury Lounge this Friday night.

That's why if I could take one person to our show this Friday night, living or dead, my answer would be... Dan Banham. It was almost going to be Bruce Lee but Dan's my friend, he's a nurse & a nice guy! You can follow him on twitter @danbanham . If he gets heaps of followers it would be really funny. Don't tell him I sent you.

Also, this will be our last show for ages. We're talking 'recording'. Seriously. Actually, I can guarantee you this will be our last show for at least 4 months. So invite a friend (living or dead) and come party with us this Friday night.

Here's the gritty details...

Midnight Spin 11:30
The Grates 10:30
Akudama 9:30

DATE: Fri 9th July

NOTES: 21+ Doors: 9:30 PM / Show: 9:30 PM $10

Thanking you in advance, yours in underwear,

The Grates bear.

Dear Boston,

We play you next Tuesday night. Please be awesome! We hit TT The Bear's stage this Tuesday June 15th with the local likes of The Rodeo Church & Busy Arms. We're sandwiched sexily right in the middle. Do not miss this sex sandwich. Tickets are cheap and dirty. Language? Filthy. Minds? Clean.

That is all.
Patience

Dear Canada,

Things I love about you & am excited about enjoying on our tour, which is about to start any second. Canadian bacon (which is the same as Australian bacon but ours isn't as famous). Growing a beard in the Spring & Steve Nash that awesome golfer JUST KIDDING! Basket Ball player. Poutine. Poutine x the words 'Invented by gourmet stoners? I think yes.

*** Montreal Show This Wednesday June 16 at Il Motore, 179 Jean-Talon W Montreal *** Public heath care (also like Australia) and Steam Whistle Beer. Especially Steam Whistle Beer!

*** Ottawa Show This Thursday June 17 Mavericks Bar 221 Rideau Street. With Library Voices and Pack AD *** Early Thanksgiving, colourful money (also like Australia) AND how your national symbol is a b-b-b-beaver!

*** Brantford Show Friday June 18 at The Ford Plant, 1 King Street Brantford - Brantford, we have never been to you before. This will be a sexy first *** The drinking age is 18 or 19 everywhere and that 24 bro, Jack Bauer, isn't he meant to be Canadian?

*** Toronto Show$ This Saturday June 19th. Yes we play two! The first being kinda early at 5th Annual João Carvalho Mastering NXNE BBQ at 6:20pm and the next is kinda late at Wrong Bar 1279 Queen Street with (hold your dicks) Best Coast, Les Savy Fav, Surfer Blood and Mannequin Men!!! *** I'm pretty sure you Canucks invented Basket Ball and Anti-Gravity Suits. Both very cussin' cool. Maybe even the portable high chair, definitely table hockey and zippers. I mean where the cuss would we be without zippers? Where the cuss would we be without Canada.

Come down and watch us rock out way harder than you're probably used to. It will be fun.

Yes! That's right, this Saturday Night 29th March. It's a very cheap show, grandma, and doors open 6pm with most of the action starting around 9pm. Have you been to Brooklyn Bowl before? Well, you can go bowling, smash food & eat beers etc. It's truuuue, great fun for the whole family (but don't even THINK about bringing Uncle Robert). Scott T has eaten most things on the menu at Brooklyn Bowl. These are his top 5 recommendations...

1) French Bread Pizza! The Beach and the San Gennaro varieties are both really good
2) Mac and Cheese - super rich and super good, it will make you fatter but totally worth it
3) Rock and Roll Fries - Fries, cheese, gravy, and seasoning. Just delightful
4) Collared Greens - THE best side
5) The Wings - they have this crazy smokey BBQ flavor and come with a premium Blue Cheese to dip them in, highly suggested

Sat 27th March
Brooklyn Bowl
$5!

So, great night for all! Come along, be inspired, win a game of bowl, impress the opposite sex, slow dance to 'Rock Boys' and go home while a smile... on the inside!

Oh lawdy it's been a while,

All we can dream in these cold winter daze - what's that you ask? Cold winter daze? - yes, cold winter daze alright, just for a little bit we have been seeing how the other half live, the half in the Northern hemisphere, let me tell you, they're harsh bastards but fair, they come from incredible stock who once survived freezing temperatures in loin cloths alone. Us pathetic southerners do all that we can to not slip into deep freeze by cranking the heat up to 30, prancing around in swimmers, practicing for our upcoming summer shows which will be back home in the very bosom of blossoming Australia.

Sydney, the city of excess, the succulent, juicy capital of NYE celebrations will get a little more heated this year as we come to town to celebrate the occasion at Purple Sneakers House Party with first-time visitors to our shores UK acts The Boxer Rebellion and Baddies, USA’s tornado of awesome, Ponytail and LA’s head hipster and leader of the indie DJs, Franki Chan. They’ll also be letting loose a whole slew of Aussie crew & DJs such as Philadelphia Grand Jury, Beni (Kitsune), Astronomy Class, Red Riders, Shazam (Bang Gang 12”), DZ, Deep Sea Arcade, Chaingang, Surecut Kids, Young Heretics, The Trivs, Strangeways, Joyride and of course the Purple Sneakers DJs with PhDJ will be there too!!

Entry to three stages, free love and music to set your heart on fire at Manning House, Sydney Uni on December 31st, can be obtained here, at www.purplesneakersnewyearseve.com or from Oztix, Moshtix and Ticketek.

And that's not all for us sun worshipers, if you live in Victoria we'll be hitting the stage of Solar a festival held in Mornington, Victoria with the very likes of Bliss N Eso, Ladyhawke, Birds Of Tokyo, Drapht + Various (DJ Stage). Hit them up here www.solarmusicfest.com

The final frontier, Tasmania - treacherous and true, land of the righteous and unrefined rock n roll pagans, we can't wait to rumble with you in exhaled and amplified glory January 9th at Soundscape along side Children Collide, Ugly Duckling and Empire Of The Sun - more tasty details at www.thesoundscapefestival.com

Until then, keep warm,

Winning Tickets & Gaining Teeth.

Posted Thursday 10 09 2009

Greetings!

Summer was gorgeous and grand. Well at least it was for us. We were pregnant with anticipation for our sophomore album to be released in North America. Finally, the time has come to birth 'Teeth Lost, Hearts Won' to these great peoples. Actually here's a story, a true story, last friday night we played *ahem brag alert* a sold out show at The Mercury Lounge in NYC. A pregnant woman just entering her second trimester timidly came along, she was worried people would frown on her 'going to a rock show in that condition'. However, she came along, saw no frowns AND the baby kicked for the FIRST time, ever, while we were on stage. In time with the beat too. Pretty special. She said she's going to be playing 'Teeth Lost, Hearts Won' in the delivery room. They let you do that y'know. Oh yeah, you can play any sorta music you want.

THE BIRTH : Once again, 'Teeth Lost, Hearts Won' will be released this upcoming September 15th. Don't forget to not mark it on your calendars. Or not put a reminder in your iPhones. Or not write it down the bottom of your mom's shopping list. Or not tell your grandparents. Or not tell your BFF.

.....oh just found out it's available digitally now on iTunes and Amazon
.....or you can order the vinyl LP on Amazon, which comes with a free CD + MP3 download

WIN : Also if you would like to go to this weekend's Monolith Festival, which is in Denver so you should probably only compete if your local OR can book a plane trip quick snap, we have a double pass to give away. If you would like one head over to fuelfriendsblog.com and enter. All you have to do is email Heather a story about a time when patience was important to you, or why we need Patience, or something rad about Australia. She will pick a winner at noon tomorrow, that’s 12pm Mountain Standard Time, Friday. Include your full name with your email entry. It doesn't have to be long.

Thanks guys, hope to see some of you on the weekend in Colorado (+ Peublo, Phoenix & LA!)

"Teeth Lost, Hearts Won" North American Release + Alien Fantasy Story

Posted Thursday 20 08 2009

"Salutations wise ones! We come in peace and in ROCK! " - if I was ever to be abducted by aliens, I'd wish that was their introduction. Then I'd be like "Sweeeeeeet! Let's jam!" then we'd be like jamming hits that were outta this world, kicking jams so sticky your eyelids would glue together & your ears would pop right out and your teeth would explode! That's the kind of alien abduction I'd be OK with.

That will probably NEVER happen. Luckily, THIS WILL!

Living In America - The Song By James Brown.

Posted Thursday 02 07 2009

Did you guys know James Brown had the best funeral ever? Definitely google that if you're young. Ok, honey bees we are psyched to be announcing some shows in America and Canada! 2/3rds of the band are leaving this weekend while 1/3rd of the band is already livin' la vida loca in Brooklyn. Once we're reunited we plan on practicing our ears off in preparation for the fun times to be had in, at & around the following places...

July 12th - Ottawa, ON - Live 88 Lounge
July 15th - New York, NY - Piano’s - Tickets Here
July 22nd - New York, NY - Piano’s - Tickets Here
July 24th - 26th - Guelph, ON - The Hillside Festival
July 28th -  Toronto, ON - The Legendary Horseshoe (free!)
July 29th - New York, NY - Piano's - Tickets Here
September 13th - Morrison, CO - The Monolith Music Festival

+ More dates to be announced!

So please come one, come all. Patience might even attempt to dance in some of her vintage ballet costumes she picked up at a steal. Of course they are very fussy so who knows. The clothes constantly complain of sore feet and say camp things like 'I can't even think straight' and 'gay by nature absolutely fabulous by choice'. Actually, they're hilarious. Crazy costumes, they spent too much time in the closet! Ha! (I thought of that last one myself, could you tell?).

OK, OK, I have to go pack. Keep in touch, and come out for the good times.

Talkin' 'bout Your Tourin'ation

Posted Friday 08 05 2009

Hi there peopi!

We are knee deep in tour and let me tell you, it's a cracker! Brisbane was one of the most intense and excitable crowd we've ever had the pleasure of playing to. And we weren't alone in those thoughts....

"Yeah, that was really fun, there were so many people" - DZ's thoughts on Brisbane (DZ are such a great band. You should buy your Mum their demo for Mothers Day).

and Canberra was a curve ball, selling our days before we arrived, they pretty much slayed any preconceptions I had of a Canberra audience!

"That was awesome" - Johnny Children Collide on Canberra (BTW it's actually really confusing going on tour with two Johns. Especially now that John Grates also answers to Johnny).

We are super pumped to get ourselves to a town near you so better get your tickets now for Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart as we have sold out all other shows and there's limited tickets left in each of those cities! Woo Hoo!

HQ, Adelaide, SA
Sunday 10 May 2009
Tickets available through Venuetix: www.venuetix.com.au or (08) 8225 8888

Tickets available through Ticketek: www.ticketek.com.au or 132 849

In other news... OMGSHAUNMICALLEFISATOTALLEGEND! Yes, that's right, I bet you've been hearing Shaun Micallef's name whispered on every whispering wind. He's back on the screen and back in the scene hosting new game show 'Talkin' 'bout Your Generation'. It aired last Tuesday and nailed the ratings... but how will it rate this coming week when Patience goes on and fights for her right to party as a member of Generation Y! I'm not sure if they have invented anything better than first place yet, but I reckon that's what they'll have to do Wednesday morning, after our gal makes her prime time debut LOL

You can see Patience on 'Talkin' 'bout Your Generation'
Channel 10. 7:30pm
with Peter Rosethorn and Dylan Lewis.

And we're off to a flying start! Catch you round the traps on our touring adventures tiger!

May the Fourth be with you.

Posted Saturday 07 03 2009

h00dy d00dy,

START: *This is Patience typing* When I was young one of my friends (boyfriends) made a truly intelligent crack about my birthday which is May 4th. He said MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU. Pretty good, right? I have shared this knowledge with you for several reasons.

1) 4 is a really friendly number.
2) May is the best month of the year.

MIDDLE: I'm not sure if you are familiar with the GFC (Grates Fever Cat, d'uh) but America pretty much asked us to come and save them from it. America was like "Oh pls pls pls The Grates can you come over and save us from this huge monster cat that always sings 192020?" and ve vere like "Ok OK, no need to beg". So we're heading to SXSW (again, yes!) for another 4 days of non stop music and ribs. We're playing a whole bunch of incredible shows, some so good we're not allowed to brag about them..

END: And now for our final piece of love advice. Instead of going out this weekend how about 'Be Tempted'? "Be tempted?" you say? Yes, by... Rockwiz Salutes The Bowl from 9:20 on SBS.

Those who are familiar with our twitter or tumblr will already be aware that recently I had the delight of singing in a Paul Kelly, Glen Richards (Augie March) sandwich. RocKwiz Salutes The Bowl was a huge success with 10,000 people at The Myer Music Bowl to witness a spectacular night's entertainment. I preformed on rockwiz not so long ago but if you missed it you can catch my duet with Brod Smith from The Dingos here:

Thanks for making it this far into the mailout, catch you in May if not before!

Fire and Flood benefit sells out!

Posted Friday 27 02 2009

Today as I was doing my morning internet business, you know the sort, coffee, email and your favourite blog, I noticed my inbox filling up rapidly with emails. This is normal cos I have a lot of business I need to attend to (and am on a lot of mailing lists for things I have lost interest in, like Facebook for example. No I'm kidding, how could anyone lose interest in a social networking site?) BUT one email was v.v. important. The email telling me that the Fire And Flood benefit gig we're playing next week with Powderfinger, Robert Forster, The  John Steel Singers, The Boat People and Dan Parsons sold out in minutes this morning.

Australians have already given so much to the cause and continue to give. I can only imagine that the Sound Relief concerts in Melbourne and Sydney are going to have the same response.

So good on you if you bought a ticket, good on you if you gave to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal or the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal, good on you if you've helped those in need. This is a wonderful response! Thanks for being a part of it.

Take care :)

Address to The Cowboys of 2K9

Posted Friday 16 01 2009

Howdy Cowboys Of 2K9,

This week we'll be discussing hot topics...Triple Js Hottest 100, Photo Blog For BDO, The Highly Anticipated Arrival Of Political Troubadour Tim Fite! And What Rock Tragics Think Of Patience's Performance On RockWiz.

Triple Js Hottest 100 : Voting closes this Sunday so if you haven't voted yet, please do it now. Here http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100/ I heard that if any songs you voted for get in the top 10 God gives you an orgasm for free and 'Burn Bridges', 'Aw Yeah' and 'Carve Your Name' were voted 1,2 and 3 'Best Songs To have An Orgasm To' by The Angels. OKool?

Photo Blog : The Big Day Out begins this Sunday and to co-incide with this minor event The Grates are staging a major event, the 3rd Grand Opening of their Photo Blog. Not to be missed! We will be uploading new pictures daily of the interesting and hilarious world around us, including any nasty or innocent backstage BDO experiences... http://gratesontour.tumblr.com + http://twitter.com/thegrates

Tim Fite : The best thing to come out of Brooklyn since Aaliyah (1979-2001), The Notorious B.I.G (1972-1997) or Neil Diamond (he's still alive?), Tim Fite and his brother will be with us soon to play Laneway Festivals around Australia and few side dates of their own. There are lots of great bands playing Laneway this year and Tim Fite is worth the cover charge alone. So I think your getting a good deal. It's like seeing every other band for free, which is the same price as an orgasm you *might* win of god.

Catch him here...

31 Jan 2009    Laneway Festival    Brisbane, Queensland
1 Feb 2009    Laneway Festival    Melbourne, Victoria
3 Feb 2009    Vanguard         Sydney, New South Wales

6 Feb 2009    Laneway Festival    Perth, Western Australia
7 Feb 2009    Laneway Festival    Adelaide, South Australia

Hear him here http://www.myspace.com/timfite OR if you own our break out, crunchy like cereal album 'Teeth Lost, Hearts Won' skip to track 10 'Not Today' for his sophisticatedly rube vocals.

Rock Tragics Review Patience On RockWiz :
"I heard you got a brain transplant and the brain rejected you!" Bob, Cosgrove NSW, "Mum, you look hot" Little Billy, Gray park, Vic.

Well, another day, another dog house! Talk again soon,

Let Me In Your Body, I Want To Be Inside You... The Patience Hodgson story...

"After 2 fabulous sets at Falls Festival I was lulled into a false sense of security, I felt like I could fly. Then when I leaped in the last song as Southbound in Busselton Saturday, gravity slapped me across the face, bringing me back down to earth. So I crashed like a baby elephant and sprained my ankle to the maximum.

I pledge, hand on chest, that we will still play an awesome rocking set this Thurday's Sunset Sounds in Brisbane. I may not be able to take so much as a step, physically, but I have studied all the mind tricks of the jedi and scientologist. I will be seated AND everywhere at the same time. When you feel the need to dance, spin, sing and clap, let it take over you, it will be me in your body!"

Want gory pics? You can see it all, plus more, at our twitter. follow us here: http://www.twitter.com/thegrates

Patience is also a Rock Wizard.

Don't believe us? Well tune into SBS this Saturday night, 9:20pm and see her gallop all over the stage on Rockwiz!

So, thanks for listening you foot lose and fancy free 2K9 babes! See you all on two feet as the year progresses!

We're guest programming Rage this Saturday 13th December 11:25pm

Posted Wednesday 10 12 2008

Just a quick note to let everyone know we'll be guest programming Rage on the ABC this Saturday 13th of December, starting 11:25pm. We'll be playing 50 or so music videos and sharing stories about some of them. We actually decided to form our band while we were all watching Rage together one night, (which made it all the more special for us to do!).

If you hate surprises, the list of videos we programmed will appear here on friday:

Also we've added some new merch (from the Teeth Lost, Hearts Won tour) to our website, including the tiki-bears shirt, 1 eyed heart shirt, deer bag and tour 7" pack. you can find them here:

Also the Dew Process X-mas party last weekend was a lot of fun. Here's a great photo from the show by Andrew (he posted it on our myspace page... I hope he doesn't mind)

Album of the Year?

Posted Monday 01 12 2008

Hello all,

Dew Process X-Mas Party

Deck the halls, the halls of The Annandale! The Dew Process Christmas Party is THIS WEEK and tickets are selling fast. Playing along side us will be Whitley and Jae Laffer (The Panics) both solo and duo, the gift of special guest Shout Out Louds frontman, Adam Olenius and the Very Special Surprise “Vitriolic” Guests (I'm not sure why they are making such a secret out of this, everybody knows it's Bluejuice) If you don't have tickets you can get them here http://www.annandalehotel.com/anh/eventdetails.asp?id=1846

Once again... what the hell am I gonna wear!?

Memories and List (That's what Josh Pyke should have called his album)

The end of year draws closer and more and more lists are being compiled, edited, and proudly displayed with everyone trying to sum up their year of experiences in a logical way. We're talking lists. List like top 5 BBQs of 2008, top 10 movies of 2008, top 50 favourite songs of 2008...

We're no different and nor are triple j, who have put the challenge out to Australia to vote for your favourite top 10 albums of 2008.

Here’s the link to the 2008 top albums voting page - http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/kingsmill/albumpolls/
You can nominate up to 10 albums, and the top 10 will be revealed on the final 2008 with Richard Kingsmill on Dec 14. Voters go in the draw to win every feature album that JJJ have had this year.
Thanks guys, See you later!
